The Hunger Games

This WebQuest is about the book, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.

Out of the ashes of a series of unnamed natural disasters in the former continent of North America rises the country of Panem.

Panem is a harsh land divided into 13 districts and ruled by the Capitol. Many years ago, the 13 districts rose up and tried to overthrow the Capitol. While 12 districts were suppressed, the Capitol obliterated District 13. Now, every year, as a reminder of their crimes against the Capitol, children, ages 12 through 18, are required to participate in the Hunger Games. Brutal and violent, two children from each district are forced to fight to the death in a televised bloodbath that all inhabitants of Panem must watch.

'Taking the kids from our districts, forcing them to kill one another while we watch - this is the Capitol's way of reminding us how totally we are at their mercy. How little chance we would stand of surviving another rebellion. Whatever words they use, the real message is clear. "Look how we take your children and sacrifice them and there's nothing you can do..."' (Collins 18-19).
